Observing Projects
From the rings of Saturn, to pulsating stars, students can study many astronomical subjects at the UMass Lowell observatory. Undergraduates will rediscover for themselves landmark discoveries in astronomy and astrophysics. It is also possible that advanced capstone students and graduate students will make contributions to astronomical research. Compelling objects that students can study include:
Time-Domain Astronomy
Variable stars
Pulsating stars
Eclipsing binary stars
Supernovae
Solar System
Planets and their moons
Moon
Sun
Asteroids
Exoplanets (planets orbiting other stars)
Star clusters and nebulae
Galaxies
And in the Radio
GHz band: Solar activity – flares, magnetic field.
Measurement of the galactic rotation curve
Supernova remnants
Black holes (e.g. Cyg X-1)
