Research

In addition to evaluating exposures at the Center for High-Rate Nanotechnolgoy (CHN), we perform research at other laboratories and industrial sites. We have evaluated exposure to nanomaterials for various manufacturing processes and published results in several journal articles.  Our expertise can provide interested companies and laboratories a comprehensive investigation into their exposures to nanomaterials.

Our research to date has covered the following topics:

  • Evaluation of local exhaust ventilation system for the use of nanoparticles.
  • Exposure assessments and environmental release at various productions associated with various applications of nanomaterials use.
  • Design and evaluation of engineering control for nanomaterial applications.
  • Simulation of airflow structure associated with aerosol nanoparticles.
  • Exposure assessment and skin toxicity associated with the use of quantum dots.
  • Evaluation of sampling devices to aerosol nanoparticles.

For example, our research has shown that not every fume hood can protect workers against exposure to nanoparticles. Please contact Dr. Tsai for more information regarding the fume hood research. 

The first paper reporting the investigation concerning the fume hood use for handling nanomaterials, entitled "Airborne nanoparticle exposures associated with the manual handling of nanoalumina and nanosilver in fume hoods," was published in Journal of Nanoparticle Research.  The Power Point slides from that presentation can be downloaded by clicking the title here: Airborne Nanoparticle Exposures Associated with the Manual Handling of Nanoalumina in Fume Hoods. 

We have recently published a second paper in the Annals of occupational Hygiene, entitled "Airborne Nanoparticle Exposures while Using Conventional, Constant Velocity and Air-Curtain Isolated Hoods." This paper extended the research from the first paper to include an evaluation ofthe performance of a new hood designed by Prof. Huang at the National Technical University of Science and Technology in Taipei, Taiwan. Prof. Huang donated a prototype hood to our labs, and we found that it works extremely well when used for the handling of nanoparticle powders.

The CHN has formed the Nanomaterials and Health Consortium (CHN-NHC), which provides an opportunity for interested industry participants who are interested in the evaluation of exposure to nanomaterials, research into nanomaterials and health issues, and the development of best practices for working with nanoparticles. We welcome industries to join our membership and extend horizon of research. Our brochure describes the benefits to the participants and our capabilities.
