Hi-Spin Research Program

The HI-SPIN (Heavy Ions and SPectroscopic Investigations in Nuclei) experimental research program in the Department of Physics and Applied Physics at UMass Lowell carries out basic research in experimental nuclear physics and applied research in nuclear detection devices and techniques. The physics research is funded by the U.S. Department of Energy. The focus is on quantum phenomena in rapidly spinning atomic nuclei, with emphasis on the delicate interplay between collective and single-particle excitations. Collective phenomena include rotation and vibration of nuclei that can be characterized by a deformed shape, while single-particle effects feel the presence or absence of nucleons in specific quantum orbits.
