Radiological Non-Destructive Evaluation
UMass Lowell Radiation Laboratory is well equipped to perform radiographic Non-Destructive Analysis (NDA) of composite materials. Utilizing the Radiation Laboratory facilities thermal neutron beamline, it is possible to perform NDA imaging analysis on composites materials that typically do not provide contrast between bulk composite structure and defects such as voids and delamination. The neutron radiographic imaging allows for much higher resolution of defects compared to traditional techniques. This sensing technique will allow our team to better identify and understand the effects of defects in composite panels that are used to fabricate large scale wind turbine blades.
