Start Up Companies
The Massachusetts Medical Device Development Center (M2D2) is a lifeline for the state’s smaller medical device companies, offering inventors and executives easy, affordable, and coordinated access to world-class researchers and resources at the Lowell and Worcester campuses of the University of Massachusetts. It leverages the engineering, business and clinical strengths of the UMass campuses in Lowell and Worcester to provide fee-based services in the areas of business planning, product prototype development and clinical pathway assistance. Over the past several years M2D2 has connected with more than 100 startup medical device companies, providing significant assistance to more than 40 of them. These companies in turn have raised more than $4.2 million in external funding.
six new labs and five of six private offices. The firms are developing products to address such critical health issues as glaucoma, wound care and osteoporosis-related fractures. One company, VasoTech, has secured more than $2 million in NIH funding to develop a biodegradable stent.
Some companies have graduated from M2D2, having secured significant external funding.
NuOrtho Surgical is one success story. The company has obtained more than $2 million in venture capital and last September launched its first product, the Ceruleau probe, which is used during arthroscopic surgery to ‘rescue” cartilage.
