Research Currently in Progress

  • Electronic and optical phenomena in polymeric materials and molecular solar cells

    The investigation of the electronic and optical phenomena in polymeric and molecular materials is carried out in areas such as charge carriers transport and optical recording of nano structures. A detailed investigation of bio-sensors for detection of environmental pollutants has being carried out. In addition, funding from Natick Soldier Center has helped develop research in the area of novel solar cells and Organic Photovoltaics

  • Enzymatic and biomimetic synthesis of materials for environmentally safe flame retardants and polymers for drug delivery systems.

    New polymeric materials have been synthesized using enzymes such as Horseradish Peroxidase, and Lipase and their properties have been investigated. Several patents have been granted and patent applications have been filed. This work is being pursued in collaboration with Prof. Ram Nagarajan, Arthur Watterson, Prof. Virinder Parmar, and Dr. Lynne Samuelson and Dr. Nando Bruno (Solder Center, Natick)

  • Nanostructured materials, their properties and applications

    Electro-spinning technique has been utilized to create nano-fibrous membranes. These membranes have very large surface areas and can be surface functionalized for sensor and a variety of applications such as sensors for heavy metal ions and explosives. In addition, sequential ionic absorption of polymers and nano-particles have been assembled to fabricate sensors and optical devices.

  • Optical and nonlinear properties of new polymeric materials

    A state-of-the-art research laboratory in this area has been established as a multidisciplinary research laboratory. A number of graduate students, post-doctoral fellows and visiting scientists from organizations such as U.S Army Natick Laboratories, have participated in this research. A number of invited talks at both national and international meetings as well as publications have resulted from this work. Fluorescence and nonlinear optical properties of materials have been investigated. The materials are molecular and polymeric in nature and were developed under the Office of Naval Research Multi University Research Initiative (ONR MURI) funding and an award from Natick Soldier Center

  • Research Collaboration at the University

    An interdisciplinary program involving the physics department and a number of other departments in both the colleges of Arts and Sciences and Engineering has been put into place. The principal research collaborators in the last decade are listed below. Research collaborations with federal govt. labs (US Army Natick Labs) and other universities have also been established.

  • Research Involvement- Mentoring of Students and Research Colleagues

    In the past ten years, supervised and co-supervised the research of twenty graduate students from the Physics and Chemistry Departments. Some of these students have received national awards. Dr. Dong Yu Kim who was co-supervised with Sukant Tripathy won the prestigious American Chemical Society Unilever Award for his thesis on Surface Relief Gratings and is currently a faculty member in Korea. Dr. Ke Yang was a finalist in international student paper competition held by The Materials Research Society in 1998. Xin Li Jiang's thesis was chosen for the Outstanding Ph.D Thesis Award for Science and Engineering in the UMass system in 1998. Three of the graduate students supervised have been awarded the University Graduate Scholar Award. They are Dr. Lian Li, Dr. Ke Yang and Dr. Xian Yan Wang. Dr. Subhalaksmi Nagarajan was awarded the Outstanding Graduate Student Award in Polymer Science Program in 2007 and the Bausch & Lomb Student Innovation Award for Innovation in Research in 2008. In 2011, Mr. Abhishek Kumar, was the recipient of the SPIE award and an APS travel award. Abhishek Kumar was awarded Chancellors medal and Soumitra Satapathy the outstanding graduate student in 2012. In addition, at the Center for Advanced Materials undergraduate and high school students have been provided the opportunity to get research experience and several have gone on to pursue careers in science and engineering. Dr. Yang Yang, (Ph.D 1991) is currently Professor at UCLA; Dr. Dong Yu Kim, (Ph.D 1998) is Associate Prof. at Kyongju Institute of Science and Technology, Korea; and Dr. Braja Mandal (postdoctoral fellow 1990- 1992) is currently Prof. at Illinois Institute of Technology. Several other students and postdoctoral researchers are pursuing careers, universities and corporations around the world.
