Rebecca Farnham, Vocal Performance and Music Education

Hometown:

Lowell

“UMass Lowell provides me with the tools and resources to jumpstart my education and my future.”

According to Rebecca Farnham, you don’t need to travel far to get a world-class education. As the Lowell native says, “I wanted an excellent education close to home and didn't have to look much farther than my own backyard. I knew UMass Lowell would provide me with the tools and resources I needed in order to jumpstart my education and my future.”

However, she did travel far. Farnham was one of fifteen music students from around the United States selected to participate in an exclusive opera program in Verona, Italy. While there, she studied under famous vocal coaches and opera stars, and even got to appear onstage. As part of her studies, the fluent French speaker also took Italian lessons each day.

“Being at UMass Lowell has afforded me a fantastic musical education,” says this University Scholar, who is on a full scholarship. She names Prof. Timothy Crain of the Music Department as a mentor. “He's taught me to be an independent thinker, that hard work always pays off, and inspires me to approach every aspect of my life with this attitude,” she says. “It is worth coming to UMass Lowell just to learn from him!”

While studying in Italy was an experience second to none, there were certain things she missed about campus. “I loved Italy, but missed the available practice rooms, and computer lab in Durgin Hall,” she says. “WiFi is really hard to come by overseas, and it certainly makes you appreciate the technology available on campus.”

With a bright future ahead, Farnham is looking forward to performing opera, hoping some day to grace the stage of the Vienna Opera House. “The possibilities are endless, and I know that the education I've received at UMass Lowell will take me anywhere I want to go!”
