The mission of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences is to reduce the burden of human illness and dysfuntion from environmental causes through multidisciplinary biomedical research programs, prevention and intervention efforts, training, education, technology transfer and community outreach.

The purpose of the Health Disparities Research program is to foster multidisciplinary research that will elucidate underlying mechanisms by which the interaction of physical exposures and the social environment leads to health disparities.

NIOSH, the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health, is a federal agency of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the Department of Health and Human Services, is responsible for conducting research and making recommendations for preventing work-related illnesses and injuries.
