Encounters & Exchanges in U.S. History is a content-based professional development program for teachers in grades 3 – 5 and 8 – 11 in the Danvers, Lowell, N. Reading & Reading public schools.

From 1987 until 2011, New Horizons provided academic support at Lowell High School for economically disadvantaged first-generation-college-bound minority students.  New Horizons’ academic support services included: academic tutoring for math, science and SATs; course selection advising; career/college exploration; and assistance with college and financial aid applications. Students worked on strengthening the math, reading, writing, and study skills needed for success in college.  They were also required to participate in various extracurricular enrichment activities, including after-school workshops, community service projects, cultural enrichment events, and college campus visits.

RAMP UP brought University of Massachusetts Lowell students to the Kathryn P. Stoklosa Middle School & Henry J. Robinson Middle School in Lowell on a weekly basis, to provide math support to children in grades 5 to 8 who were at risk of failing mathematics. Since it’s inception in 2008 through 2011, students demonstrated an increased understanding of class lessons, submitted homework more regularly, and expressed a positive attitude toward the tutoring sessions.

The program was funded by the Greater Lowell Community Foundation & the Theodore F. Parker Foundation.
