David PerryIn what has become a tradition, UMass Lowell will host a gala Commencement Eve Celebration to celebrate an academic milestone for graduating students while helping to fuel the dreams of future students.
“Honoring Excellence” will take place at the UMass Lowell Inn & Conference Center on Friday, May 27, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. The celebration — which includes cocktails, dinner and awards — is in its fourth year and is a major scholarship fundraising event.
The evening honors student award winners, the Commencement speaker, honorary degree recipients Barbara Hogan, Mico Kaufman, Stuart Mandell, Robert Manning and Donna Manning, and distinguished alumni John Kennedy. The evening has become one of the University’s pre-eminent fundraisers, last year bringing in more than $500,000 for the UMass Lowell Scholars Fund, which helps deserving students in need of financial assistance. This year’s effort is on track to surpass 2010’s record.
Honors include the Chancellor’s Medal for Student Service, honoring six graduating seniors who have offered outstanding contributions to the University. Four will receive the Chancellor’s Medal for Community Service for what they have done to contribute to the public good and bring credit to the University, the larger community and themselves. Other awards include the University Scholar-Athlete Award, the Trustees’ Key, Class Valedictorian and The Chancellor’s Medal for Distinguished Academic Achievement.
The $125 per person admission includes a fun-filled gala with specialty cocktails, a fine gourmet dinner and entertainment, showcasing UMass Lowell students.
