ConcertsFree Concerts Showcase Talents of Student Musicians

What: UMass Lowell music students will share their talents during free holiday performances for the public and campus community. Events include:

  • UMass Lowell Concert Band – The ensemble will perform selections in a variety of genres under the direction Blair Bettencourt, a Music Department faculty member. Nicholas Abruzzese, a UMass Lowell graduate student from Burlington, will make his conducting debut, leading the group for the selection “Ragged Rozey” by march composer Karl King. Monday, Dec. 7, 7:30 p.m.
  • UMass Lowell String Ensemble – The group will perform timeless classical selections conducted by Music Department faculty member John-Morgan Bush. Wednesday, Dec. 9, 7:30 p.m.

McGMcGauvran Center to be Unveiled as South Campus Hot Spot

When: Tuesday, Dec. 8, 2 p.m.

What: UMass Lowell will showcase its completely transformed McGauvran Center – the 12th new building opened by the university in six years – during a ceremony expected to draw more than 200 students, faculty, staff, UMass system leaders, city officials and friends of the university. Originally opened in the 1970s, the new McGauvran Center will offer the campus and community a variety of contemporary dining spaces and options, as well as meeting and lounge areas and classrooms. Event speakers are expected to include UMass Lowell Chancellor Jacquie Moloney; UMass President Marty Meehan; Laurence Siegel, associate vice chancellor for student affairs and university events; and student Matilda Matovu, a political science and biology major from Tewksbury. Tours of the building will be provided.

PoetryDay of Poetry Engages Region’s Middle- and High-School Students

When: Thursday, Dec. 10, 8:30 a.m. to 2:45 p.m.

What: More than 600 middle- and high-school students from Boxford, Ipswich, Middleton, Lowell and Topsfield will participate in creative writing workshops, readings, spoken-word performances and an open mic program at UMass Lowell as part of the Student Day of Poetry. Mentors who will lead the event’s writing sessions include UMass Lowell English majors from Andover, Dracut, Malden and Melrose and Sandra Lim, an award-winning poet and professor in the university’s English Department. Other acclaimed authors who will present their work and lead sessions include Ada Limón, Aja Monet and José Olivarez. The event is presented by UMass Lowell’s English Department in collaboration with Mass Poetry, an organization that promotes an appreciation for and participation in the art form.

PrintsStudent Printmakers Display Their Works at Free Exhibit

When: Exhibition runs through Saturday, Dec. 12. Gallery hours are Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

What: Prints created by UMass Lowell art and design students will be on display in a free exhibit that is open to the public as part of the Boston Printmakers 2015 North American Print Biennial Show. Student entries are presented in partnership between UMass Lowell and the Lowell Telecommunications Corp.

AdmissionsOpen House Welcomes Prospective Graduate Students

When: Wednesday, Jan. 13, 3 to 7 p.m.

What: Working professionals and students interested in pursuing their education at UMass Lowell can learn about graduate, continuing-education and online offerings during an open house designed to meet their needs. Prospective students can find out more about the university’s 42 master’s, 36 doctoral and more than 70 graduate certificate programs, which are offered on campus, online or in a blended format that combines both options. Faculty program coordinators, graduate admissions, registrar’s office and financial aid staff will be available to answer questions. UMass Lowell programs are nationally accredited. On-site registration will be available.
