New Emerging Technologies and Innovation Center Reaches Milestone;
Time Capsule Found at Site to be Opened
Wednesday, March 30, 2011
3:30 to 5:30 p.m.
WHAT: UMass Lowell’s future and past will come together with the ceremonial “topping off” of steel on the new Emerging Technologies and Innovation Center (ETIC) and the opening of the Smith Hall time capsule.
Construction of the ETIC, an 84,000-square-foot building that will be home to researchers and educators in cutting-edge fields such as nanotechnology, plastics engineering and biomedicine, got underway last year and is reaching a milestone with the addition of the final beam of steel on top of the structure. Students, faculty and staff and the members of the community have been invited to sign their names to the beam before it is put in place.
The ETIC is one of several construction projects moving forward at UMass Lowell, including a new parking garage on North Campus and a new academic building on South Campus, for which a groundbreaking is scheduled next month.
The long-forgotten time capsule was discovered during demolition of Smith Hall, a residence hall razed last year to make way for the ETIC. The time capsule was assembled in 1947 and placed in the cornerstone of Smith Hall. The opening of the capsule will end months of speculation about its contents. To carry the tradition forward, students and members of the university community will be offering items to be included in a new time capsule that will be placed in the ETIC.
After the speaking program, a reception with an exhibit of historical photos will follow at nearby Alumni Hall.
Guests and speakers will include: UMass Lowell Chancellor Marty Meehan; state Sen. Eileen Donoghue; Lowell Mayor James Milinazzo; state Rep. Thomas Golden, who is a UMass Lowell alumnus; and other alumni and student leaders.
WHERE: Behind Lydon Library, 84 University Ave., UML North, Lowell. Media parking is available across the street in the Cumnock Hall lot. For directions, contact the Office of Public Affairs.
