Former White House Official, UMass Lowell Alum Presents Morse Lecture
Thursday, April 7, 2011
WHAT: Former National Security Council staff member Roger W. Cressey, a UMass Lowell alumnus, will present the 2011 F. Bradford Morse Distinguished Lecture on International Relations.
On Sept. 11, 2001, Cressey was serving as the council’s director for transnational threats and was a key part of forming and carrying out White House counterterrorism policy. He will share lessons learned and his unique perspective on counterterrorism and security with the public as the keynote speaker of this year’s F. Bradford Morse Distinguished Lecture.
Cressey, a Gloucester native who majored in political science at UMass Lowell, worked in the White House during the Clinton and Bush administrations, as well as in the Department of Defense and State Department. His distinguished service earned him the Meritorious and Superior Honor Awards from the State Department and the Defense Department’s Exceptional Civilian Service Award. His career in the public sector also includes working on United Nations peacekeeping missions.
The founder and former president of a leading cyber-security firm, he is a senior vice president of Booz Allen Hamilton, a Virginia-based consulting firm and defense contractor. Cressey serves as a regular on-air commentator on network news programs on issues including counterterrorism and security.
The lecture is presented by UMass Lowell and Middlesex Community College to benefit the F. Bradford Morse Endowment for the Study of International Relations, Sustainable Development and Peace. The endowment supports the lecture series and other educational programs, including the Dean Bergeron International Relations Club, which presents UMass Lowell’s annual Model United Nations Conference. The club recently earned six awards, the most for all participating teams, at a Model U.N. event in Turkey.
