M2D2 Start-Ups Present New Product Ideas

When: Tuesday, Nov. 24, 5 to 8 p.m.

What: The Massachusetts Medical Device Development Center (M2D2) is hosting a Company Showcase on the UMass Worcester campus with a special emphasis on device ideas from UMass Worcester doctors, who will present to potential private and public investors and the community. Exhibits featuring additional new product ideas also will be on display. At 5 p.m., Michael F. Collins, UMass senior vice president for Health Sciences and UMass Medical School chancellor, will kick off the proceedings. Other Worcester campus administrators and M2D2 directors also will speak. From 5:45 to 7 p.m., inventors will present their new ideas. From 7 to 8 p.m., networking and exhibit discussions will occur. M2D2 is a UMass Lowell-UMass Worcester initiative that helps entrepreneurs move new medical device ideas from patent toward production. It is supported by the University of Massachusetts and the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative’s John Adams Innovation Institute.

Program Discusses Recession’s Effect on Region

When: Monday, Nov. 30, noon

What: Prof. Robert Forrant will describe the impact of the global economic crisis on employment and housing in the Commonwealth. Next year could be a very challenging one as manufacturing exports from the region lag, small businesses work to get loans, unemployment continues and foreclosures may increase. The discussion will include potential strategies to get the regional economy moving again.

Bank President to Offer Career Advice to Students

When: Tuesday, Dec. 1, 4 p.m.

What: The Manning Speaker Series continues with Edward Manzi ’82, president and chief executive officer of Fidelity Bank, one of the oldest independent community banks in central Massachusetts. Manzi will offer students career advice and answer questions about his two decades in banking. Free and open to the public, this talk is part of the Robert J. Manning ’84 Speaker Series, which was made possible with a gift from Robert C. Pozen, chairman of Boston-based MFS Investment Management.

Person Living with HIV Speaks, AIDS Memorial Quilt on Display

When: Tuesday, Dec. 1, noon to 5 p.m.

What: To commemorate the 21st Annual World AIDS Day, UMass Lowell welcomes keynote speaker Jose Sostre of the Lowell Community Health Center who is living with HIV. Accompanying the talk is a display of six panels of the NAMES Project Foundation AIDS Memorial Quilt.  Each panel has been personally crafted to honor someone who has been lost to AIDS.  A majority of the panels are from the local area and can be viewed in Cumnock Hall on Tuesday, Dec. 1, noon to 5 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 2 and Thursday, Dec. 3, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m and Friday, Dec. 4, 9 a.m. to noon. Related events include a Poetry Slam on Wednesday, Dec. 2 at 8 p.m. and a Community Dialogue on Thursday, Dec. 3 at 11 a.m.

Women-Created Art Offered at Holiday Fair

When:  Thursday, Dec. 3, 2 to 8 p.m.

What: Holiday shoppers will find much to choose from in a bountiful array of artwork, handcrafts, homemade foods and books ߝ all created by women associated with UMass Lowell. A continuous performance stage will feature music, historic skits and spoken word. Raffles will be drawn throughout the day with prizes from local businesses. The event concludes with a wine and cheese tasting from 6 to 8 p.m. and a silent auction.  Entrance fees are $5 for general admission and $1 for students.  A percentage of sales will support the UMass Lowell Center for Women and Work, dedicated to improving the conditions of work and economic opportunities for women. Event sponsors include the Jeanne D’Arc Credit Union and the Office of the Chancellor.

Speaker to Discuss the Politics of Making Films

When: Thursday, Dec. 3, 2:30 to 4 p.m.

What: Nick Paleologos, director of the Massachusetts Film Office will discuss “The Politics of Making Films in Massachusetts.”  Paleologos is a two-time Tony Award-winning producer, whose feature films include “Hurlyburly” and “Ghosts of Mississippi.”  Prior to his career as a producer, Paleologos was a member of the state House of Representatives for 14 years. He also served as House chairman of the Committee on Education, Arts and Humanities. The event is sponsored by political science students.
