Professor, Author to Speak on Economy, High-Tech Employment

When:            Wednesday, Oct. 1, 3:30 to 5 p.m.

What:            William Lazonick, professor of Regional Economic and Social Development, will present a talk based on his book, “Sustainable Prosperity in the New Economy?: Business Organization and High-Tech Employment in the United States.” Lazonick’s book also formed the basis of the recent commentary piece he contributed to The Financial Times on the true cost of stock buy-backs (the article is available at www.ft.com). Lazonick is also the author of “Quest for Shareholder Value: Stock Repurchases in the U.S. Economy,” which will appear in Louvain Economic Review. This program is offered as part of UMass Lowell’s faculty salon series.

UMass Lowell Hosts Premiere of Kerouac Film as Part of Celebration

When:            Film premiere is Friday, Oct. 3 at 7 p.m. Events run Thursday, Oct. 2 through Sunday, Oct. 5.

What:             Lowell Celebrates Kerouac will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the publication of Jack Kerouac’s autobiographical novel, “The Dharma Bums.” The premiere of the film “One Fast Move and I’m Gone: Kerouac’s Big Sur” will be held on the UMass Lowell campus. Other events will be held throughout Lowell and include poetry competitions, readings, walking tours, musical performances. City Manager Bernard Lynch Speaks on Lowell’s Renaissance

When:            Monday, Oct. 6, noon

What:            Lowell City Manager Bernard Lynch will speak as part of the Department of Regional Economic and Social Development’s lecture series, sponsored by the Sloan Foundation Industry Studies Program and the UMass Lowell Center for Family, Work and Community. Lynch will speak on “Lowell’s Renaissance and Current Strategies.”

State Official Speaks to Students on Post-9/11 Homeland Security

When:            Tuesday, Oct. 7, 9:30 and 11 a.m. (rescheduled from Sept. 23)

What:            Massachusetts Undersecretary for Homeland Security Juliette Kayyem will speak on “Managing Homeland Security Seven Years After 9/11” at an event for students organized by Political Science Prof. Jeffrey Gerson. Kayyem, appointed by Gov. Deval Patrick, is the first to hold the post and is responsible for developing statewide homeland security policy. She previously worked for the Department of Justice, served as an adviser to then Attorney General Janet Reno and was appointed by Congress to the National Commission on Terrorism. Kayyem is the author of “Preserving Liberty in an Age of Terror” and has been a national security analyst for NBC News.

Massachusetts Poetry Festival Comes to Lowell

When:            Friday, Oct. 10 through Sunday, Oct. 12

What:             UMass Lowell is among the sponsors of the Massachusetts Poetry Festival, which will present poetry-themed events, including an intercollegiate poetry showcase. Other events include readings, literary tours, open mikes, workshops, film screenings and more around Lowell. Featured readers are scheduled to include UMass Lowell’s Paul Marion, executive director of outreach, as well as Rhina Espaillat, Regie Gibson, Marjorie Agosin, Ed Sanders, Lucie Brock-Broido, Martin Espada, Nick Flynn and Robert Pinsky.
