Comedy Central’s Mike Birbiglia Performs at UMass Lowell

When:           Friday, Sept. 5, 8 p.m.

What:            Massachusetts native Mike Birbiglia brings his unique blend of comedy to UMass Lowell for a show sponsored by the Campus Activities Programming Association. Birbiglia has toured the United States for seven years, performing for live audiences as well as on national TV, including “The Late Show with David Letterman” and his two Comedy Central specials. Birbiglia is also the author of “Secret Public Journal,” weekly autobiographical diary entries that are e-mailed to 30,000 fans, broadcast on nationally syndicated radio shows and posted on Birbiglia’s MySpace page. Birbiglia has also brought the humorous “Journal” to the stage on a national tour. Tickets to the UMass Lowell performance are $8 for students and $20 for the general public in advance and $20 for all at the door. Tickets are available online at www.umltickets.com.

New Show Features Works by Children’s Author and Illustrator

When:           Artist talk and reception is Wednesday, Sept. 10, 3 to 5 p.m. Exhibit runs through Thursday, Oct. 2; gallery hours are Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

What:           The work of author and writer Timothy Basil Ering will be exhibited at the University Gallery. The show includes 24 original illustrations from his popular children’s book, “The Story of Frog Belly Rat Bone,” the tale of a boy who finds strange, speck-like treasures and an unforgettable creature who watches over them as they grow. Ering’s surreal and whimsical work features a blend of delicate tones and bursts of glowing color.

University Groups Sponsor Marc Broussard at Boarding House Park

When:           Friday, Sept. 12, 7:30 p.m.

What:            Louisiana-based bayou soul troubadour Marc Broussard comes to Lowell for a show that will likely sound familiar to many. Broussard recently made his Atlantic Records debut with “Must Be The Water,” which includes a title track that served as the theme for Turner Broadcasting’s on-air promotions of the 2008 NBA All-Star festivities.  Broussard also performed his hit song “Home” as part of the kickoff to the weekend of NBA All-Star events before a nationwide audience on TNT. The Lowell Summer Music Series performance is sponsored by the UML Office of Student Activities and Multicultural Affairs and the Campus Activities Programming Association. Advance tickets are $15 for students (purchase at www.umltickets.com) and $21 for the general public at www.lowellsummermusic.org. Tickets at the gate are $25 for all.

Works by Art and Design Students Go on Display

When:           Reception is Thursday, Sept. 18, 3 p.m. Exhibit runs through Thursday, Sept. 25; gallery hours are Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

What:           “Selections from Art & Design Studios,” curated by Gallery Coordinator Michele Gagnon, features the work of students in UMass Lowell’s bachelor of fine arts program, including those specializing in ceramics, graphic design, foundations and photography.
