Spring 2008 BFA Candidates’ Works Go on Exhibit
When: Reception is Thursday, May 22, 4 to 8 p.m.; exhibit runs through Saturday, May 31
What: UMass Lowell’s Art Department and the Fine Arts Division of the College of Arts and Sciences presents this exhibition of senior projects from the Art and Design studios, featuring a variety of media including advertising campaigns, animation, painting, photography, product design, sculpture and more.

Women in Science and Engineering Holds Career Day for Middle-Schoolers
When: Friday, May 23
What: More than 400 students are expected to attend this daylong event presented by Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) that focuses on introducing middle school girls to careers in science and engineering, and help them understand the value of taking math and science courses in high school to prepare themselves for a broad range of professions that require solid backgrounds in those areas. The daylong event will include 26 hands-on workshops led by women professionals who have forged successful careers in science and engineering. Helen Greiner, a mechanical engineer and computer scientist who is the cofounder and chairman of the board of Burlington-based iRobot Corp., which makes robots for consumers (including the Roomba vacuum) and the military. Students from Andover, Ashby, Billerica, Chelmsford, Dunstable, Groton, Lowell, Lawrence, Methuen, Pepperell, Reading, Tewksbury, Townsend, Tyngsborough and Westford are expected to participate.

Sen. John Kerry, Honorary Degree Recipients Headline Commencement
When: Commencement - Saturday, May 31, 10 a.m.
Scholarship Fundraising Dinner ߝ Friday, May 30, 5:30 to 8 p.m.
What: U.S. Sen. John Kerry will deliver the commencement address, where nearly 2,000 UMass Lowell graduates are expected to receive bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees. The University is also honoring five outstanding individuals with honorary doctoral degrees: Gururaj “Desh” Deshpande, co-founder and chairman of Sycamore Networks Inc.; Charlayne Hunter-Gault, award-winning journalist and special correspondent for National Public Radio; Mary Jo Leahey, ’37, founding benefactor and inspiration for the Mary Jo Leahey High School Summer Band Camp; Gerald Martone, ’79, director of Humanitarian Affairs at the International Rescue Committee; and Edward O. Wilson, professor emeritus at Harvard University and Pulitzer Prize winning author. Thomas O’Connor, ’77 and ’80, will receive the University’s Distinguished Alumni Award. A scholarship fundraising dinner will be hosted by Chancellor Marty Meehan the night before commencement where the honorary degree recipients and student award winners will be recognized. Opening the Door to College Sports
When: Thursday, June 5, 7 p.m.
What: UMass Lowell Athletics’ mission is “Reaching Beyond the Games,” and as part of that, the department is inviting members of the high school athletics community ߝ players, coaches, administrators and parents ߝ for a seminar designed to aid high school student athletes with their journey toward intercollegiate athletic participation.
