Chancellor Meehan Keynotes 2007 STEM Summit IV

When: Wednesday, Oct. 17, 8:15 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Where: Sturbridge Host Hotel and Conference Center, Sturbridge
What: Chancellor Marty Meehan will deliver the keynote address at a statewide summit that explores preparing students for Science, Tech, Engineering and Math (STEM) careers.  More than 600 educators, both pre-K through 12 and higher education, community and business leaders, and state and local-level policy makers will attend.

UML Sponsors Smart Growth Symposium

When: Thursday, Oct. 18, 8 a.m. to noon
Where: Cumnock Hall, UML North, Lowell
What: Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Thomas Hylton will participate and UML Chancellor Marty Meehan will welcome attendees at a symposium dedicated to exploring smart growth in our region.  The Northeast Association of Realtors, which earned a Smart Growth Initiative Grant from the National Association of Realtors to sponsor this event, will co-sponsor with UMass Lowell.  Other specialists include Dave Turcotte, senior program manager at the UMass Lowell Center for Family, Work and Community.

Open House: UMass Lowell’s Premiere Admissions Event

When: Sunday, Oct. 21, 9 a.m.
Where: Tsongas Arena. 300 Martin Luther King Jr. Way, Lowell
What: UML offers a day of workshops, campus tours and face-to-face contact with faculty and admissions staff at this open house event for prospective undergraduate and graduate students and their guests.

Chalupka Presents “Are We Poisoning Our Children?”

When: Sunday, Oct. 21, 2 p.m.
Where: National Park Visitor Center, 246 Market St., Lowell
What: Children encounter chemicals every day in their food, water and air. They are at much greater risk of harm from exposure to toxic chemicals because their brains and bodies are still growing. Prof. Stephanie Chalupka of the UMass Lowell Nursing Department, School of Health and Environment, will discuss how to create a healthy environment for child development. The presentation is part of the Parker Lectures.

Community Teamworks Inc. Honors Local Heroes

When: Wednesday, Oct. 24, 6 to 9 p.m.
Where: Lenzi’s Restaurant, 810 Merrimack Ave. (Route 110), Dracut
What: Community Teamworks Inc. will honor local heroes who have made significant contributions in the community.  Among the honorees are UMass Lowell employees Assistant Prof. Patrick Scollin of UML’s Community, Health and Sustainability Department and Bowa Tucker, project manager for UML’s Center for Family, Work and Community.

Mary Bacigalupo Educational Forum

When: Saturday, Oct. 27, 8 a.m. to noon
Where: Kathryn P. Stoklosa Middle School, 560 Broadway St., Lowell
What: This year’s forum, titled “Then and Now: New Directions for Family, School and Community Partnerships,” will feature Dr. Joyce Epstein, director of the National Network of Partnership Schools, Johns Hopkins University.
