When: Wednesday, October 19, 11 a.m.

What: French Consul General Francois Gauthier will speak on “French Foreign Policy in Europe and the World: Values, Principles and Policy Formation.” Gauthier took office as the new Consul General of France in Boston on August 9, 2005, and has held numerous diplomatic and senior administration positions in the French government.

Wang School Students Scare Up Some Creations in the Lab
When: Tuesdays and Thursdays, 3 ߝ 5 p.m., Oct. 18, 20, 25, 27
Where: College of Engineering Design Camp Lab, Pasteur Hall 106, UML North
What: Youngsters from Lowell’s Wang Middle School are learning to use engineering skills to create a haunted classroom. Fourteen students in grades six through eight meet twice a week with Doug Prime, director of K-12 educational outreach for engineering, to turn scary ideas into moving, gory objects ߝ a skeleton that sits up, a skull dripping blood and the like. A mini-computer enables the students to operate lights, recorded voices and motors to animate their creations. The finished products will be set up in a Haunted Classroom at the Wang School.

Thousands Expected to Attend Open House 2005 This Sunday
When: Sunday, Oct. 23, 9 a.m.
Where: Tsongas Arena, downtown Lowell
What: The annual UMass Lowell Open House is an opportunity for prospective students to explore academic opportunities, learn about campus life and understand the application and financial aid process. Workshops and exhibits fill the arena, and families can take buses to UML East, North and South for campus tours.

Occupy, Resist, Produce: UMass Lowell and Boston Professors Speak on Argentineans’ Efforts to Rebuild Their Economy
When: Monday, October 24, 12 noon
Where: O’Leary Library, Room 500M, 66 Wilder St., Lowell
What: Prof. Chris Tilly, department of Regional Economic and Social Development, and Marie Kennedy, Professor Emerita in the UMass Boston College of Public and Community Service, will speak about the Argentine economy. Both have traveled frequently to Latin America and have written about development in Haiti, Cuba and Central America, as well as the U.S. Tilly’s research specializes in labor markets, with a focus on inequality, urban development and public policies that promote better jobs. He has co-authored several books, including Stories Employers Tell: Race, Skill, and Hiring in America and American Cities in Transition: The Changing Face of Urban Inequality. He also is an editor of economics magazine Dollars and Sense. Kennedy is an activist and scholar who teaches, works in and writes about community development.

Common Text Series Session: Fighting Back at Work
When: Tuesday, Oct. 25, 3:30 p.m.
Where: O’Leary Library, Room 327, UML South, 66 Wilder St., Lowell
What: As part of the Common Text Program, new this semester, all incoming freshmen are reading Barbara Ehrenreich’s Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting By in America, chronicling the author’s experiences taking three low-wage jobs in different parts of the United States. UMass Lowell faculty, staff and all students have been invited to this special event, “Fighting Back at Work!” Prof. Chad Montrie of the History Department will lead an interactive discussion of how workers fight back in the workplace ߝ from taking five extra minutes on a break, to class-action lawsuits ߝ from conducting a search for a new job during the work day, to organizing major labor movements. The program is offered in conjunction with the freshman College Writing course and is sponsored by the English Department.

Moses Greeley Parker Lecture Features UML Prof. John Warner
When: Tuesday, Oct. 25, 7 p.m.
Where: O’Leary 222, UML South, 66 Wilder Street, Lowell
What: UML Prof. John Warner, a leading green chemistry scholar, will talk about the creative process in the arts and sciences and what it takes to bring something “new” into existence. He also will examine the consequences of labeling that often separates the artistic from the scientific. The Moses Greeley Parker Lecture Series is free and open to the public. UMass Lowell is a co-sponsor of the weekly lecture series.

Larry Cohen, National CWA President, to Give Keynote Address at Sustainable Jobs, Workplaces Conference
When: Thursday, Oct. 27, 6 ߝ 8:30 p.m.; keynote at 7 p.m.
Friday, Oct. 28, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Oct. 28: Alumni Hall, UML North, University Ave., Lowell
What: Keynote speaker Larry Cohen, president of the Communications Workers of America, argues that collective bargaining is a public good. His 7 p.m. Thursday address will be followed by discussion on the reorganization of work in particular industries. The conference continues on Friday with a series of presentations in which union leaders and shop floor activists will describe challenges they face at work. The academic researchers will describe ways their research helps to address the challenges. The 2005 conference ߝ Sustainable Jobs, Sustainable Workplaces ߝ is sponsored jointly by CITA (Committee on Industrial Theory and Assessment) and the Labor Extension Program at UMass Lowell. UML Students Offer Children Safe Zone Trick or Treating
When: 5 to 8 p.m., Monday, Oct. 31
Where: Sheehy and Concordia Residence Halls, UML South, Perkins St., Lowell
What: Student groups will welcome local children into two residence halls for Halloween trick or treating. Student escorts will take children through the decorated building, and kids and families can participate in games and other activities set up for them. For the adventurous, there is a Haunted House, and for the not-so-adventurous, a designated No Scare Zone for trick or treating. Multiple student organizations collaborate to make this annual event exciting and fun.
