Monday - Feb. 28

Noon to 1 p.m.

WHAT:  Congressman Marty Meehan will present "Light at the End of the Tunnel" - his proposal for a U.S. exit strategy for Iraq - at the University of Massachusetts Lowell.

WHERE:  UML O'Leary Library, Room 222, 61 Wilder St. Lowell

WHY :  Meehan, a senior member of the House Armed Services Committee and a UML alumnus, formulated his plan for a phased-in withdrawal of U.S. troops after a recent visit to Iraq.  The Meehan plan proposes that the U.S. begin the process of drawing down the majority of forces by the end of this year and having only a small, mobile force remaining by mid-2006.  It also calls for completing the training of Iraqi security forces and committing to reconstruction assistance.

The UML meeting, which is open to the public as well as faculty, staff and students, will include a presentation by Meehan followed by a question-and-answer session.  The event is sponsored by the University's Department of Political Science, Department of Sociology, and Peace and Conflict Studies Institute.
