LOWELL -- Lucy Wafo graduated from Lowell High School with a 3.78 grade-point average just three years after she emigrated from Cameroon.

With stats like that, Wafo was better placed than most recent immigrants to pursue whatever career she chose.

For her though, its all about giving back.

Wafo, who will be graduating Cum Laude from UMass Lowell on Saturday with a biology degree, is a recipient of the Chancellor's Medal for Community Service. She plans on pursuing a career in medicine serving low-income residents of her adopted country, to thank all the people who have helped her since she arrived.

"My career goal is to be a doctor. With all Lowell has done for me, working in Lowell would be great," said Wafo, who said she would like to specialize in women's health-care issues, including maternal care, teenage pregnancy and SPV education.
