BOSTON -- The Board of Higher Education has awarded the University of Massachusetts Lowell $322,986 in grants to foster student interest in science and math.

Sen. Steven Panagiotakos and Rep. Kevin Murphy, both Lowell Democrats, helped land the grants, which are part of the Science, Technology, Engineering and Math Pipeline Fund.

The fund was created to build interest in the subjects so that Massachusetts students can gain skills needed in the job market.
