Welcome, Transfer Students!

It may already be January, but there is still time for transfer students to make a smooth transition to UMass Lowell for the Spring 2008 semester.

Spring semester classes begin Jan. 28, giving students enough time to apply, send a transcript, receive an admissions decision and go to the Orientation/Registration on Jan. 22 and 23.

UMass Lowell admissions staff expects to have about 350 transfer students entering the University this spring.

“There are several reasons students think about transferring mid-year,” says Dean of Enrollment Management and Student Success Tom Taylor. “They may not have made the connections they hoped for during their fall semester, they may come face-to-face with financial challenges or they may not have been able to arrange academic schedules that allow them to work enough.”

UML has improved all systems that help transfer students enter the University because they represent an important part of the student body. Transfer students comprise about half of UML’s new students each year and half of the students graduating each spring.

A key issue for transfer students is the number of completed course credits that will be “counted” by UMass Lowell.  The transfer dictionary, a catalog that defines the  similarity between other schools’ and UML’s courses, determines the transferability of any student’s coursework.

UML’s transfer dictionary now contains more than 300,000 courses from more than 1,000 colleges, universities and community colleges, with an average of 100 additional courses added daily.  The high volume of courses for which transferability has already been determined means a student can quickly see which credits will transfer with them.
