The Discovery Series of the UMass Lowell Center for the Arts

The 21st season of the UML's popular Discovery Series urges families to discover treasures close to home!  Six events plus one special event comprise the series including comedy & juggling; music, Chinese acrobatics, theatre, puppetry; Japanese Taiko drumming and storytelling, all selected for children ages 4 and up.

“If you live in the Merrimack Valley, you don’t have to go far to discover treasures from around the world in your own backyard,” says Christine Brown, director of the Center for the Arts.  The Discovery Series presents a wide variety of world-class arts and entertainment at a reasonable price.”  Imagination, creativity and FUN are the hallmarks of the Discovery Series. Events still to come are:

  • Dec. 2:  John McCutcheon plays and sings a “Celebration of Peace” concert
  • Feb. 3:  (special event) German puppeteer Matthias presents magical Snow White
  • Mar. 9:  Portland Taiko sets pulses racing with Japanese drumming
  • April 6:  Anne of Green Gables sings & charms her way into our hearts
  • May 4:  Mozart, Monsters & Matisse enchant in an engaging, artistic puppet show

The Discovery Series offers families the flexibility to create their own series based on children’s ages and interests.  Families who choose four or more shows of the six offered, save money over the $12 cost of single tickets.  Groups of 10 or more, ordering in advance, receive a special rate of $10 per ticket.

All performances run approximately one hour without intermission. Performance times vary. They take place in Durgin Hall, 35 Wilder St. on the UMass Lowell South Campus.  The theater is handicapped accessible and convenient; free parking is nearby.

The Discovery Series is supported by Nancy & Richard K. Donahue; Enterprise Bank & Trust Co.; the James L. Cooney Agencies; Community Teamwork, Inc.; and Mary Jo Leahey.
