Welcome Class of 2011!

Welcome Class of 2011 to UMass Lowell!

Fall 2007 incoming students started the semester well feted, well fed and well informed. A four-day whirlwind of activities began on Saturday, September 1, move-in day for new students, and culminated in the new student convocation on September 4 at the Campus Recreation Center.

At convocation, Chancellor Marty Meehan, deans and top administrators formally welcomed new students to the UML community and launched the academic year. Following the success of last year’s inaugural convocation, Bert Jacobs returned as keynote speaker. Jacobs is a founder of Life is Good, the company famous for its cartoon insignia symbolizing the company’s message of optimism.

“I am excited about welcoming our new students as never before,” says Dean of Students Larry Siegel. “We have a very full schedule of activities for them.”

Fetes and feasts planned for the four-day welcome weekend included brunches, barbecues, late-night pizza parties, an ice cream social and a parking lot brunch for commuter students. For entertainment, students enjoyed a range of evening performances – from a band to Damien the Hypnotist – and activities that include bingo, an outdoor movie, inflatables, casino night and dodgeball.

Bert Jacobs, founder of life is good, will be the Convocation speaker.

Ed Gerety, a motivational speaker, lead a high-energy, interactive program designed to make freshman year a success. Representatives of Monster.com presented skill-building workshops on first-year success and money management.

Students chose from additional workshops that cover informational (active minds and stress reduction, campus involvement/getting connected, community service opportunities and an introduction to the City of Lowell) as well as cautionary (the risk of using fake IDs, an alcohol-and- other-drugs jeopardy game and the dangers of high risk behavior) topics.
