Chancellor

Marty Meehan is the second chancellor of the University of Massachusetts Lowell and the 14th leader of the institution and its predecessor schools, founded in the 1890s. He assumed the chancellorship on July 1, 2007. For a full biography, visit the Chancellor's website.

Founded

The University of Lowell was created in 1975 through the merger of Lowell State College and Lowell Technological Institute.  Each of these predecessor institutions was founded in the 1890s.  The campus became part of the University of Massachusetts system in 1991.

Location

UMass Lowell has three campus clusters – North, South and East – 25 miles northwest of Boston along the Merrimack River.

Degree Programs

Some 88 undergraduate and graduate degree programs in five colleges:  Arts and Sciences, Education, Engineering, Health and Environment, and Management.

Athletics

UMass Lowell Athletics is an NCAA Division II program with Division I ice hockey.  UML River Hawks sponsors 16 varsity sports, competes in Hockey East and the Northeast 10 Athletic Conference.

Financial Assistance

In 2006-2007 academic year, the campus awarded more than $50 million in aid.  On average, UML makes offers to meet more than 90 percent of a student's demonstrated need. Approximately 73 percent of undergraduate students receive some assistance.
