Lowell Summer Music Series Season Announced

Grammy-Loaded for 20th Season

Jakob Dylan and the Wallflowers
Jakob Dylan & the Wallflowers join other Grammy-winning acts in a star-studded series at this year’s Lowell Summer Music Series.

Seven Grammy Award winners will sing out from the Boardinghouse Park stage in downtown Lowell at this year’s Lowell Summer Music Series.  From three-time winners Los Lobos to Lifetime Achievement winner Joan Baez, the downtown venue has a 20-show lineup spanning more than 50 years of folk, blues, roots and classic rock.

The series, presented by the Lowell National Historical Park and the Lowell Festival Foundation, opens on Saturday, June 27, with Los Lobos, an eclectic rock band from East LA.  They’re followed by the Grammy-winning “Texican” rock ’n roll of Los Lonely Boys on Friday, July 10.

Independent punk folk singer/songwriter Ani DiFranco tunes up Saturday, July 11, followed by college crowd favorite Michael Franti & Spearhead, who take the stage with their “rock oriented reggae” and “message of global unity” on Friday, July 17.

The Grammy artist parade continues in July with singer-songwriter Aimee Mann on July 18 and Blues Traveler on July 31.

Beginning with the first Newport Folk Festival in 1959, Joan Baez has been singing out for human rights, free speech and peace in venues ranging from Boston’s Club 47 to New York’s Bottom Line and San Francisco’s Filmore Auditorium; from the Lincoln Memorial to Soledad Prison; and from Iceland to Woodstock to the Middle East.  On July 30, Baez brings her legendary voice to Lowell for her “50th Anniversary Tour.”

Grammy-winning acts continue with Jakob Dylan & the Wallflowers on Aug. 14.  He may be Bob Dylan’s son, but Jakob and his band have developed their own pop rock sound with influences from Robbie Robertson, Bruce Springsteen and Tom Petty.  Zydeco star Terrance Simien & the Zydeco Experience round out the Grammy bill on Aug. 28.

This year’s strong lineup also includes Melissa Ferrick & Catie Curtis; Dar Williams; The Derek Trucks Band; party band Entrain; Celtic fiddle sensation Eileen Ivers & Immigrant Soul; perennial favorite Livingston Taylor; blues guitar virtuoso Ronnie Earl & the Broadcasters; and folk legend and New Hampshire farmer Tom Rush.

Boardinghouse Park will also feature the Free Fun for Kids Series, a program of 10 free children’s concerts every Wednesday and Thursday, July 8 through August 13.  Performances include Curious Creatures, Dinoman, Mariana Iranzi and The Yo-Yo People.  Concerts run 11 a.m. to noon.  The Artship Enterprise will offer art programs before each show and trolley rides will be available afterwards.  Free Natural Snacks will be provided courtesy of Ian’s Natural Foods.
