College of Management Honor Society Inducts 37
Beta Gamma Sigma Recognizes Student Excellence
Braxton Hinchey, Stu Mandell and Kathryn Carter attended the Beta Gamma Sigma induction.
Thirty-seven College of Management students were inducted into Beta Gamma Sigma, the international business honor society, in a ceremony at the Wannalancit Conference Center on May 1. The society, founded in 1913, recognizes students who demonstrate academic achievement in business studies, personal integrity and professional excellence. Kathryn Carter, dean of the College of Management, welcomed students, their families and faculty members, noting that many of those selected for the honor society not only earned high grades in their courses but did so while juggling jobs and other responsibilities. “Clearly, you’re the best and the brightest and we wish you the absolute best of luck as you go forward,” Carter told the inductees. “You’re going out there and you can compete with the best,” said Carter, who also recognized special guest Stuart Mandell, professor emeritus of marketing and founder of the College of Management, which will celebrate its 50th anniversary later this year. Braxton Hinchey, another professor emeritus of marketing, who founded UMass Lowell’s chapter of Beta Gamma Sigma, was the keynote speaker at the induction. “America’s economic and culture strength rests, I believe,” Hinchey said, “on four strong pillars”: economic stability, leadership in science and technology, educational excellence and a diverse population. “The men and women here tonight are evidence the future of the world is in good hands,” he said. The officers of the Beta Gamma Sigma chapter at UMass Lowell -- Asst. Prof. Saira Latif, president, and vice presidents Nicholas Blanchette, Michael McCarthy and Celia Merullo -- conducted the ceremony that officially inducted the new members into the organization.
