Mercury usage

Gregory Morose, senior program manager in the Lowell Center for Sustainable Production, is conducting a study of mercury usage for the United Nations.

The U.N. retained the Center to conduct a global assessment of mercury usage in applications such as thermostats, lighting, dental amalgam and mining.

Morose, the principal investigator, will release a final report in July that will analyze demand and use of mercury, the level of substitution of products and processes, and experiences with technology alternatives.

In October, he will travel to either Nairobi or Bangkok to participate in a U.N. working group with representatives from 90 countries. The group will assess options for the global control of mercury.

Earlier, Morose investigated mercury alternatives for the state of Maine. A report on that project, co-authored by Morose and Catherine Galligan, was used as supporting research material that led to the first ban of mercury-containing products for switches, relays and measuring devices in Maine. Galligan is project manager for the Sustainable Hospitals Project.
