"Untitled Black Men Learning to Fly," by Kerry Stuart Coppins

The Art Department is hosting an exhibition of photographs by Kerry Stuart Coppin in the University Gallery until May 8. Coppin began the exhibit, “Materia Oscura/Dark Matter: Photographs of Urban Africa and the Diaspora,” in 1990 as a way to elaborate and celebrate the positive side of the African community experience.

The exhibit features large-scale black and white photographs of Africans and their environment. Coppin says he hopes to change people’s views of Africa from a suffering continent to celebration and life.

The University Gallery features works by professional artists from around the country. For more information on gallery hours, contact Michele_Gagnon@uml.edu.
