Students Travel to Dudley to Show Off Techniques

Tutoring Conference
Christian Moseley, Graham Lilley, Lauren Wright and Lance Mahar have achieved Master Level CRLA (College Reading & Learning Association) certification, having completed the required number of training, tutoring and presentation hours.

Four Centers for Learning peer tutors presented workshops at the 14th Annual NEPTA (New England Peer Tutor Association) Spring Conference at Nichols College in Dudley on April 12.

Engineering majors Lauren Wright and Lance Mahar’s presentation, titled “Tutoring Techniques for Science and Engineering: Using Steps and Banks,” focused on modeling the use of a step-by-step approach and equation banks to solving math, physics and engineering problems.

Biology major Graham Lilley and exercise physiology major Christian Moseley presented a session called “Hocus Pocus, Come Get your Focus,” which was geared to peer tutors across the disciplines.  They demonstrated relaxation and meditation techniques that busy peer tutors can utilize when things get stressful and hectic in the tutoring center.

The regional for-tutors, by-tutors conference hosted more than 250 peer tutors and academic resource professionals from two- and four-year private and public institutions from all the New England states.

The NEPTA steering committee is made up of tutoring center coordinators from UMass Dartmouth, Northeastern University, Providence College, Mass. College of Pharmacy and Allied Health, Assumption College, Nichols College, Bristol Community College and Wellesley College. UMass Lowell, one of the founding institutions of NEPTA, is represented on the steering committee by Suzanne Gamache, coordinator of Tutoring Services, Centers for Learning.
