Four members of the UMass Lowell faculty, each representing a different department, have been named as recipients of funding under the Joseph P. The four were chosen from a pool of 18 applicants, with a total of $17,000 in funding available. All four received equal funding of $4,250.

The recipients, and their project proposals, are:

  • Prof. Cindy Chen of Computer Science for her proposal, “A Spatio-Temporal Knowledge Discovery System for Nuclear Physics Application;”
  • Prof. Michaela Wyman Colombo of the Graduate School of Education for her proposal, “Improving Academic Literacy for Fourth-Grade English Language Learners;”
  • Prof. Ashleigh Hillier of Psychology for her proposal, “Evaluation of an Interdisciplinary Music Intervention for Adolescents and Young Adults on the Autism Spectrum;” and
  • Prof. Ellen Wetmore of Art for her proposal, “The Joys of Motherhood.”

In considering the grant applications, Vice Provost for Research Partha Chowdhury wrote in his letters to the awardwinners: “The review committee gave priority to projects that demonstrated potential for external funding and involved newer faculty.”
