Experts to Discuss Strategies for Tackling Climate Change

WHAT:   Chancellor Marty Meehan’s inauguration week kicks off with a panel discussion on how government and industry can work together to mitigate the effects of global warming, starting here in New England. Called “A Vision for Addressing Climate Change,” the panel will include Energy and Environmental Affairs Secretary Ian Bowles; Dana DeCosta of Vectrix Corp., Howard Berke of Konarka Technologies; Alexander “Sandy” Taft, director of U.S. Climate Change Policy for National Grid; and Rev. Fred Small of the Religious Witness for the Earth. WBZ-TV meteorologist and UMass Lowell adjunct faculty Mish Michaels serves as moderator.
The University and its industry partners will host exhibits from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. and from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. to showcase alternative sources of energy.
The event is sponsored by the Department of Environmental, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences in cooperation with the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Engineering, the Office of Career Services, the School of Health and Environment and the Department of Community Health and Sustainability.

INAUGURATION WEEK:  This panel discussion is part of a week-long series of events marking the next chapter in the history of UMass Lowell as Chancellor Martin T. Meehan is inaugurated.  University of Massachusetts President Jack Wilson and Board of Trustees Chair Robert Manning ’84 will join numerous dignitaries, including U.S. Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and Gov. Deval Patrick, for the inauguration ceremony on Friday, April 4 at 10 a.m. at UMass Lowell’s Campus Recreation Center.
