Noted Peace Activist to Keynote Non-Violence Program

WHAT:   Internationally known peace activist Linda Biehl will deliver the keynote address for “A New Vision for Peace,” a discussion group that is part of the week-long inauguration events at UMass Lowell. Biehl is the founder and director of the Amy Biehl Foundation and Trust, an organization named for her daughter, who was murdered by gang members in South Africa 15 years ago. Linda Biehl is best known for publicly forgiving the murderers. She will appear at UMass Lowell with Ntobeko Peni, one of the convicted murderers. Biehl has dedicated her life to the eradication of gang violence in South Africa, and spends much of her time there. She is the first annual Greeley Scholar for Peace Studies at UMass Lowell and will be on campus for the month of April, working with students and engaging the community. The sponsors of the event include the Greeley Foundation and UMass Lowell’s Peace and Conflict Studies Institute (PACSI).

INAUGURATION WEEK:  This discussion is part of a week-long series of events marking the next chapter in the history of UMass Lowell as Chancellor Martin T. Meehan is inaugurated. University of Massachusetts President Jack Wilson and Board of Trustees Chair Robert Manning ’84 will join numerous dignitaries, including U.S. Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and Gov. Deval Patrick, for the inauguration ceremony on Friday, April 4 at 10 a.m. at UMass Lowell’s Campus Recreation Center.
