Official Opening of UMass Lowell Inn and Conference Center

When:             Sunday, Aug. 30, 3 to 5 p.m.

What:             More than 400 students will be welcomed as the first new residents of UMass Lowell’s Inn and Conference Center in downtown Lowell. At 4 p.m., an unveiling of a new sign on the building will take place, with brief remarks from Chancellor Marty Meehan, officials from the city of Lowell and downtown business representatives.  The Inn and Conference Center, formerly the Doubletree Hotel, was purchased in July by the university will host a mix of student housing, event space and lodging.

New Student Convocation Features Social Activist

When:            Tuesday, Sept. 1, 10 a.m.

What:             Social justice activist Jamie Washington will speak to the Class of 2013 about making a difference in the world, their own lives and the lives of others. Other speakers at this official launch of the academic year will include Chancellor Meehan, deans and faculty. Students will be treated to a post-Convocation barbecue and club fair.

‘No Woman Left Behind’ Group Presents Anti-Violence Program

When:            Wednesday, Sept. 2, 8 p.m.

What:             The group ‘No Woman Left Behind,’ formed following a 2007 attack on three women athletes from DeAnza College, presents a program on bystander involvement and the responsibility of all to intervene when anyone is being victimized. The group’s work has been featured on ABC’s "20/20."

Where:           Cumnock Hall Auditorium, One University Ave., Lowell

Comedy Show by Zach Galifianakis of ‘The Hangover’

When:            Friday, Sept. 4, 8 p.m.

What:             Zach Galifianakis, one of the stars of the hit movie ‘The Hangover,’ will deliver a standup comedy show for UMass Lowell students and the public. Advance tickets for students are $12 and $20 for the public.  Tickets at the door are $25 for all. To purchase tickets, check out www.umltickets.com.
