The University Library is pleased to offer UML distant learners access to the rich online resources of the University Library. With an internet connected computer and an internet browser, distant learners can search thousands of academic journals and download full text articles through the library website. A growing list of course readers is available on the website. Many UML faculty instructors are embedding live links to full text articles from their own web pages or from UMass Online courses. Academic support and guidance can be found on many of the Libraries’ web pages. Professional reference librarians are available online and by telephone. Distance from campus should not be a barrier to making full use of the Library. Learn how to connect to UML online resources.
Search Online Databases
UML Librarians have created a wide range of web links to valuable information resources at commercial and public websites to guide research. Ebsco’s Academic Search Premiere is an excellent multi-subject resource in which to begin searching for full text articles. The Resource by Subject web page is also helpful.
Search the UML Libraries Collections
Distant learners can search the UMass Lowell online catalog to find books, videos, sound recordings or other material available in the libraries. Patrons must register for borrowing privileges in person. Physical material must be borrowed from and returned to the library. If distance prohibits a student from coming into the library he/she should consult a local public library about securing Interlibrary Loan services. The University Libraries are active participants in interlibrary loan programs and loan material to other libraries for patron use
Interlibrary Loan for Distant Learners
Students who register for borrowing privileges may request interlibrary loan service. Books and other physical material must be picked up and returned to the library in person. Many journal articles can be obtained electronically. Articles that have been obtained in this manner can be delivered to the patron by email or through the web.
Manage Research Findings
Distant learners are encouraged to consult reference librarians for research help. Each is a subject specialist familiar with the curriculum and the library collection. Reference librarians are prepared to help find accurate and appropriate sources of information. Feel free to contact any librarian by email, online chat, or by phone for assistance.
