Using the Catalog to Search for Books

• Books at UML
• Locations for Books
• Books at other UMASS Libraries, Boston Library Consortium Libraries or Massachusetts Public Library Networks

Go to the Library Catalog

Use the Simple Search option to search by

• Book Title ...for whom the bell tolls,
• Keyword ....+media +violence +children,
• Author....shakespeare william,
• Subject ......united states history,
• Journal Title..... journal of research in education, etc. using the pull-down menu.

1. Use Advanced Search. This option is similar to HotBot, allowing you to use pull-down menus to specify what field terms should be in (Author, Title, etc.) and what boolean operators should be used (and, or, not) between different terms. 
2. The resulting list of items includes locations (Lydon stacks, O'Leary Reference, etc.), call numbers and availability.
3. Make note of the Call Number [example: TK4539.G98] and the Library Location to retrieve the book.

Select either the BLC Virtual Catalog or the Massachusetts Statewide Virtual Catalog. For more information on the Virtual Catalogs, please see our Virtual Catalog information pages.

1. Enter the 16 digit number on your ID or Special Borrowers Card (Special Borrowers may have a number beginning with SB). You must be in the library database, with no unpaid fines on your record in order to place requests
2. Select the search option you want (Author, Title, Subject) and enter your terms. 
3. Click on Request Item for each book you want from the list that appears and follow the directions.
