GRADUATE SCHOOL REQUIREMENTS FOR UML THESIS

Please read the following instructions prior to completing the thesis process:

The thesis/dissertation must conform exactly to the UML Thesis/Dissertation Guide.  A hard copy of the guide is also available at the Registrar’s Office, Dugan Hall, UML South.

It is the responsibility of the student and the advisor to carefully follow the format in the guide. Once the thesis/dissertation has been successfully defended, the student must submit the following to the Registrar’s Office, Dugan Hall, UML South:

  1. One clean COPY, do not use original, of the signature page only, dated and with signatures of the thesis/dissertation advisor and all committee members. The original signature page is needed for archival bound copy.
  2. Signed and completed Graduation Clearance Form
  3. Doctoral students must also submit a completed “Survey of Earned Doctorates” at the time of graduation clearance. The form is also available at the Registrar’s Office, Dugan Hall, UML South.

PROCESSING OF UNIVERSITY ARCHIVAL COPIES

The binding of all theses is done through the office of Susan Koczarski, located on the first floor of O'Leary Library, UML South. Office hours are Monday through Thursday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Phone: (978) 934-4568   

Please read the instructions carefully and hand-carry the following materials to Susan Koczarski in order to insure the binding of your thesis.

  1. A completed and signed copy of the UMI Thesis/Dissertation Agreement Form. The form is available at the Registrar’s Office, Dugan Hall, UML South
  2. The mandatory 2 copies of the complete thesis/dissertation, on archival bond paper. One copy must include the original signature page. Required copies include one for the library and one for the department. Additional copies for personal use may be submitted at this time.

Processing charges include the following:

  • Binding: $15, per copy
  • Publishing fee:  $45 for Masters, $55 for Doctoral

Make one check for all bound copies and publisher fee payable to: UML Library Trust Fund.

 Search Tools For UML Theses/Dissertations

1.       Search the UMass Lowell Theses/Dissertation Database for Theses and Dissertations from 1949 to 1985.
You may search by:

    • Academic Department Author's Name
    • Keyword in Title
    • Date
    • Degree: to search, use:

o        M for Master's: Master's Degrees are offered in many fields

o        D for Doctorate: In engineering and education.

o        Ph.D.: In chemistry, physics, polymer science, radiological science, nursing

o        Or any combination of the above

  1. Search Proquest Digital Dissertations for Master's Theses and dissertations from 1981 to present.

    You may search by:


    • School Name (lowell) to get only UMass Lowell Dissertations
    • Author's Name (shuldman)
    • Advisor's Name (gower)
    • Keyword in Title (polymer)
    • Degree Date (dd=1990 or dd>1989)
    • Or any combination of the above polymer (ti) and lowell (sn)
  2. Search the UMass Lowell Library Catalog for Dissertations from 1985 to present.

Obtaining copies of UML theses/dissertations

  1. To search all theses and dissertations from UML, go to Current Research at University of Massachusetts Lowell. A copy of a needed dissertation or thesis from 1996 to present is free to all faculty, staff and students of the UML community.
    .
  2. To get the archival paper copy of any thesis or dissertation:
    • Search the UMass Lowell Theses/Dissertation Database for any item from 1949 through 1985. Search the Library Catalog for any item 1985 to present.
    • Fill out a Storage Retrieval Form including the call number and the year.
    • The item will be retrieved from storage within 24 hours (no weekend retrieval).
    • Go to the Circulation Desk of Lydon Library, North Campus to use the material.
    • The paper copy must be used in the library.

  3. To get a microfilm copy:
    • Search the UMass Lowell Theses/Dissertation Database or the PAC as above.
    • Get the call number for the item.
    • Go to the microfilm room, second floor, Lydon Library, UML North. Masters and Doctoral items are kept in separate cabinets.
    • Look by department (chemistry, education, etc.) and then by year and call number within the department.
    • Use the reader/printers to make a print copy.

Thesis or dissertation from another institution:

  • Search ProQuest Digital Dissertations  for any item from 1981 to present. An order number will be included in the record. For dissertations from 1997 to present, retrieve the first 24 pages free.
  • Search WorldCat via FirstSearch to identify older items
  • Fill out an InterLibrary Loan Request Form (book form) for each item. Please include the ProQuest Digital Dissertation order number in the ILL request.
  • Items found in WorldCat can sometimes be borrowed, but only if UMI does not have a copy.
  • Order the Thesis/Dissertation from ProQuest. You may choose microfilm, paper, or (after 1997), electronic copy.

The Library subsidizes the purchase of Theses/Dissertations from Proquest for:

      • Graduate Students - Three (3) Theses/Dissertations during their student years at no charge.  Additional items can be purchased for $35 (2006 price) each through the InterLibrary Loan Department.
      • Faculty Members - Three (3) free Theses/Dissertations per year through the InterLibrary Loan Department.
