In May the university dedicated the newly renamed Martin T. Meehan Student Center to our University of Massachusetts President, and former UMass Lowell (UML) Chancellor, Marty Meehan. Meehan has a long history with this university as Alumni, Congressman, Chancellor, and now President of the University of Massachusetts system.

The UML Library is the home of Marty’s Congressional and personal archives. Tony Sampas, the Head Archivist at the Center for Lowell History, assisted UML's Advancement Office helping to curate the exhibits on display throughout the first floor of the Meehan Student Center. You can see memorabilia, watch videos, and learn more about Marty’s place in this city and the nation.

A portion of Marty’s archive can be viewed here with more to come in the future.

Saturday, May 9, 2026 is Doors Open Lowell, an annual event to celebrate Lowell’s architectural heritage, urban living, and culture. Historical buildings around the city open their doors to the public, many of which you can’t see the rest of the year. Among many great locations, the Center for Lowell History will be open to visit.

Access will be between 11 a.m. - 3 p.m. on Saturday at the Patrick J. Mogan Cultural Center. You can explore the research material, archives, and artifacts we host in our collection. Follow that up by exploring the rest of the city!

You can see the list of buildings and the hours they’ll be open when you visit the Doors Open Lowell webpage.
