Student Hardware Recommendations & Software Licenses
What kind of laptop will I need on the UMass Lowell Campus?
Students and parents seeking to buy a laptop computer will find recommendations from the campus Information Technology (IT) office at student hardware recommendations (pdf).
Does UMass Lowell require the purchase of any special software for my computer?
IT recommends purchasing, at a minimum, the appropriate operating system for your computer and a full Microsoft Office suite of products, including Word and Excel.
Students in specific program majors requiring special software solutions are generally not required to purchase this software. Instead, they can access programs as needed in the fully equipped student labs at UMass Lowell.

Will I need a printer?
Not necessarily. You may print documents for a fee using your UMass Lowell ID card in the student labs, O'Leary Learning Commons, Fox Hall Centers for Learning, Lydon Library and Southwick Hall through the campus-wide UPrint initiative. Learn more about UPrint.
What if I need support for my hardware or software?
The IT Help Desk (located on North Campus in Olsen Hall) will provide support for software configurations such as wireless and email. For hardware problems with your computer, you need to rely on the warranty purchased with your computer. Please notice the warranty we recommend along with accidental coverage for laptops in the student hardware recommendations.
Free McAfee Anti-Virus Protection and more – Just Download!
