Ed.D. degrees with a focus on original research
The three Ed.D. programs at UMass Lowell focus on understanding, integrating and producing original research of concern and interest to the doctoral candidate as well as contributing to the field of education in general.
Each program consists of a minimum of 36 credits of coursework and 12 credits of dissertation research. The degree is generally completed on a part-time basis, with candidates taking one or two courses each semester – there is no residency requirement. A limited number of teaching assistantships are available for appropriately qualified applicants.

Each program consists of a minimum of 36 credits of coursework and 12 credits of dissertation research. The degree is generally completed on a part-time basis, with candidates taking one or two courses each semester – there is no residency requirement. A limited number of teaching assistantships are available for appropriately qualified applicants.
Admission to the program
To qualify for admission to a Doctor of Education degree, an applicant must have earned a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college as well as a master's degree appropriate to the intended field of specialization from an accredited college. A cumulative grade point average of no less than 3.0 is expected.
Candidates are strongly encouraged to contact the doctoral coordinator Dr. Michaela Colombo (Michaela_Colombo@uml.edu) to discuss their interest in doctoral work.
The candidate should submit the on-line application form available on the Graduate Admissions website and the $50 application fee, together with:
- A statement of purpose – a two to three page essay which describes your work in education and your reasons for pursuing doctoral work. In particular, the candidate should demonstrate his/her interest in conducting research.
- GRE scores – general test
- Three letters of recommendation
- TESOL scores if appropriate
- All official transcripts (except for degrees earned at UMass Lowell).
Candidates may be required to attend for interview with the admissions committee.

Degree Requirements
In order to qualify for Doctor of Education degree, each candidate must meet the following requirements:

Complete a minimum of 48 credits in the specified doctoral program, of which 36 credits are in required and elective course work and a minimum of 12 credits in dissertation research.

Complete all course requirements for the degree program at this university.

Complete all course requirements with a cumulative grade point average of B or better.

Pass two doctoral examinations.

Satisfactorily complete and defend a dissertation as approved by the candidate's dissertation committee.

Complete the program within eight years from the date of admission.
Note: Students seeking Massachusetts certification as Supervisor/Director, Principal, or Consulting Teacher of Reading must fulfill a separate set of courses and paretic. Students should consult with their advisors before beginning course work.
