What is Project IMPACT?
Project IMPACT (Increasing Math Proficiency in Algebra with College Tutors) provides ninth-grade students at Lowell High School with a program of consistent math tutoring to increase the passing rate in Algebra I and prepare students for success on the MCAS test required for graduation. Studies have shown that tutors who work with students on a regular basis make a difference to the success of the ninth-graders and to overall student passing rates.
UMass Lowell is recruiting one part-time Corps member and 14 flex-time members from the student body at the University to tutor in the Freshman Academy. There is a $2,500 stipend, with a potential $500 bonus. The members will work with the same classes and same students on a regular schedule throughout the academic year beginning September 2008. Members will be trained by Lowell High School teachers and supervised by school and project leaders. Each Corps member volunteer will assist in two Algebra I classes of approximately 20 students.
How to Volunteer
You don't have to be a math major to be a Commonwealth Corps volunteer. You will be provided with all the necessary training and support. Be prepared to tutor a minimum of two hours a day, one to five days a week. The hours are available before, during and after school, plus Saturdays.
If you are interested in becoming an IMPACT volunteer, fill out the applications below and drop them off in O'Leary 540 by October 14, 2008. For more information on volunteering, contact Nancy_Pitkin@uml.edu.
