Pre-Application Questions
- You are welcome to enroll as a non-degree student for a total of 12 credits prior to matriculating into a formal Graduate degree program. See registration procedure for additional information.
- Yes, just follow the procedure outlined on this site.
- You are welcome to apply to more than one program. You must submit a separate application form, application fee and statement of purpose for each. If you are accepted into more than one program, you must choose the one in which you will enroll; you may only be enrolled in one graduate program at a time.
- We cannot evaluate your records prior to your applying to a graduate program. Each department has its own criteria for acceptance. If you have specific questions for a department please contact the graduate coordinator directly.
- We require all students with a three-year bachelor's degree to have their transcripts evaluated. Please see the Official Transcripts section among the Requirements for International Students.

- No. Unfortunately, the application fee cannot be waived or deferred for any reason.
- Yes, a relative or friend may pay your fees on your behalf. Please be sure that they mark your full name on their check or money order so we can credit the correct application.
- If you submitted your official undergraduate transcripts when you applied to the certificate program, you do not need to do so again when you apply to a degree program. We have them on file.
Financial Questions
- Financial Assistance is available through the Financial Aid Office in the form of loans and work study jobs on campus. Teaching and Research Assistantships are awarded through individual departments. There are no application forms for these awards. You should contact the appropriate Graduate Coordinator to inquire about TA/RA availability.

- No, there is no separate application, but be sure to notify the Graduate Coordinator of your program that you are interested.
- Generally, yes. However, the assignment of assistantships is completely up to the department, so contact your coordinator for more information.
Testing and Test Scores

0C5-V3-61 MBA, Online - In general, we try to keep all test scores and materials (letters, transcripts, etc.) for a total of two years. When you apply, all materials are gathered for your application prior to processing so that your acknowledgment letter is accurate.
- Please read about standardized tests in the application information.
- The minimum required score for the GRE or GMAT is determined by the department. Please contact the appropriate Graduate Coordinator.
- The minimum TOEFL score is 500 (paper-based) 173 (computer-based) and 61 internet-based. Computer Science has a minimum score of 550/213/79-80 and MBA and Health Management and Policy have minimum scores of 600/250/100. Please see the section on TOEFL scores in Requirements for International Students.
- All official test scores are reported to the school and passed on to the department. Departments make acceptance decisions based on internal criteria.
- You should retake the TOEFL exam and submit the official scores to us as soon as possible. If the new scores meet requirements, we will process your application for a decision.

- We MUST wait for the official score to arrive from ETS before we can send your file to the department for a decision. There are NO exceptions to this policy.
- All ETS scores are sent directly to the Office of Graduate Admissions, regardless of the department designation you entered on your ETS form.
- Yes, the Graduate Record General Exam is required for all programs at the graduate level except for the MBA program, which requires the GMAT.
- GRE/GMAT waivers may be granted by the department to which you are applying. Waivers are granted only if an applicant already holds an American Master's or Doctoral degree.

Post-Application Questions
- Please check your status online to see what items have arrived and what items are still missing. Your password and PIN number were sent to you in your acknowledgement letter. The web site status is updated as quickly as possible after new materials arrive.
- Yes, you can designate a person to check your status. You can also have them pick up your decision letter and I-20 when they are available. You must send a signed authorization letter naming this person so the Office of Graduate Admissions has your written permission on record. You may fax your authorization letter to 978-934-4058.
- No, your file will remain in our incomplete folder until we receive your official score report(s) from ETS. It will not be reviewed for a decision or for financial assistance until it is complete.
- Your decision letter will be mailed to you. The letter contains all of the necessary forms you will need to fill out as mentioned on the application status page, where you may also access your decision letter.
- Teaching and Research Assistantships are awarded through the departments. Please contact your Graduate Coordinator to inquire about your TA/RA decision status.
Post-Decision Questions
- “Conditionally” means that there is some additional condition or conditions you must meet. In most cases, the additional condition(s) is an undergraduate course offered at UMass Lowell. You must take this course during your first semester of study here. (Some graduate coordinators specify the grade you must obtain.) For additional information, please contact your Graduate Coordinator.
- Your I-20 is sent to you after we have received the $140.00 International Student fee and your Declaration of Finance form/financial statement. Please send these forms by May for the fall semester and by November for the spring semester. See additional information about timing in the section on Requirements for International Students.
- Your I-20 will be sent to you as soon as the Office of Graduate Admissions receives and processes both your financial documents and the $140.00 International Student fee.
- You are allowed to defer for a maximum of one year from the date of your acceptance. For example, if you were accepted for the Spring 2007 semester, you can defer to either the Fall 2007 or Spring 2008 semesters. You defer your acceptance by submitting a written request to the Office of Graduate Admissions. Please specify which semester you wish to enroll so that we may accurately process your request.
- The only person who can inform you of the reason you were not accepted is the Graduate Coordinator of the program to which you were applying. You should contact that person to clarify this and ask their guidance as to your options.
- The only person who can re-evaluate your file is the Graduate Coordinator. Contact the coordinator to inquire about having your file reconsidered for admittance. He or she can guide you as to your options.
- You may reapply to the same program by submitting a new application and application fee to the Office of Graduate Admissions. One question on the application asks if you have applied before and if you wish your materials to be reused. Please answer “yes,” in order to avoid any delay in processing your new application. If you are applying to a different program, you will also need to submit a new Statement of Purpose.
