University Crossing

University Crossing

University Crossing will include renovation of newer buildings that were part of St. Joseph’s Hospital as well as a new four-story student services and activity center, as shown in the artist’s rendering of the view at the corner of Pawtucket and Salem Streets, above right.

Situated at the center of the UMass Lowell campus, University Crossing will serve as a hub of student activity with a large new bookstore, food court and event spaces, as well as some administrative offices. University Crossing will provide an important connection between the University’s three campuses and the downtown business and cultural district, all located within walking distance.

The transformation of the facility will include a complete interior renovation of the newer buildings at the rear of the site, the demolition of the older buildings at the front of the site and the construction of a new four-story campus center overlooking the river. Demolition of the new buildings began in June 2012 and will be completed by the fall. Construction of the new building will be completed in 2014.

UMass Lowell purchased the facility — the site of the former St. Joseph’s Hospital — in early 2011. The property had gone largely unused since 1992, attracting only a handful of smaller health-related operations since the hospital relocated as part of a merger. The property includes 300,000 square feet that can be occupied as well as 300 parking spaces in two lots that the University has been leasing.
