About the Health and Social Sciences Building

hss-mcgauvran-view_optThe new Health and Social Sciences building is four stories high and spans 69,000 gross square feet. It houses seven classrooms, 16 seminar/project rooms, eight conference rooms and 72 faculty offices.

The four-story atrium lobby space with skylights is built in response to requests from members of the University community for space that promotes student and faculty interactions.

The LEED green building certification program encourages and accelerates global adoption of sustainable green building and development practices through a suite of rating systems that recognize projects that implement strategies for better environmental and health performance.

LEED certification features include:

  • Optimized energy performance through chilled beam technology for heating and cooling - providing 25 percent energy reduction.
  • Reduced solar heat gain provided by a white PVC roof membrane.
  • Enhanced commissioning of MEP systems to optimize indoor air quality and comfort.
  • 75 percent of regularly occupied spaces receive natural light.
  • Storm-water discharge to municipal collection system reduced by on-site retention.
  • Water efficient landscaping does not require irrigation.
  • 20 percent water consumption reduction by low flow toilet room fixtures.
  • 40 percent of construction materials manufactured within 500 miles.
  • 75 percent of construction debris recycled.
