About Us

UMass Lowell is one of three campuses of the University of Massachusetts offering Civil & Environmental Engineering along with Amherst and Dartmouth. It is one of six departments within the James B. Francis College of Engineering and the only public, accredited Civil Engineering program in the Boston Metropolitan area. Since its inception in 1970 the Department has granted over 2000 undergraduate and graduate degrees in Civil Engineering. The undergraduate program is accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering & Technology (ABET), with undergraduates obtaining the degree of Bachelor of Science in Engineering - Civil Engineering.

The Department also grants thesis and non-thesis Master of Science in Engineering degrees in each of four CEE specialty areas.  Doctorates are offered in conjunction with the Mechanical Engineering Department (Doctor of Engineering) and the Chemistry Department (Ph.D. in Chemistry - Environmental Studies).

UMass Lowell’s CEE department currently consists of 10 full-time faculty encompassing the four specialty areas in Civil & Environmental Engineering.  Almost all full-time faculty hold doctoral degrees.  Several of the faculty have distinguished achievements in research and professional service at both the national and international level; e.g., chairs and members of committees of the National Academy of Sciences, awardees of National Science Foundation Young Investigator and Career awards.  Several have published research and textbooks, serve on editorial boards for professional journals and on local, regional and national professional committees and have developed standards for civil engineering design.

Most faculty are involved in externally funded research.  Many research opportunities exist for students in each of the specialty areas - Environmental, Geotechnical, Structural and Transportation Engineering. 

CEE faculty and facilities are located at the University of Massachusetts Lowell North Campus in the Pasteur, Southwick, Falmouth and Engineering buildings.  The Department houses the Geotechnical Research Laboratory, Structural, Soils and Environmental Laboratories and collaborates with other Centers and Departments at the University on a variety of interdisciplinary research areas.
