Water System Design for Yanacaca

UML students in the Convective processes course were given the challenge to design a water delivery system to carry water from a spring to 15 homes in a remote village in Peru. The design challenges included piping and pump selection, water routing plans, selection of valves and fittings, and calculation of flow rates for various valve open configurations. Nine different students developed reports were developed, consisting of design calculations, plans, and a materials list for each design.

UML students in the Convective processes course were given the challenge to design a water delivery system to carry water from a spring to 15 homes in a remote village in Peru. The design challenges included piping and pump selection, water routing plans, selection of valves and fittings, and calculation of flow rates for various valve open configurations. Nine different students developed reports were developed, consisting of design calculations, plans, and a materials list for each design.

The best four student reports and designs were delivered to Yanacaca, Peru by Dr. John Duffy. Anecdotal comments shared by students indicated a preference for working on a project that is real and will help people, rather than just an academic “paper” project. The community had no water delivery system up to this point, and the villagers all had to get their water by going to the spring. A series of workable designs were developed that the villagers of Yanacaca, Peru can now select from to install a water delivery system within their village. Students traveling to Peru on subsequent trips will guide the villagers in installing the actual system.

Learning objectives met by the S-L project were for students to:

  • Develop one design project that consisted of a design for a real life situation, rather than an academic made-up configuration

Community objectives met by the S-L project:

  • Student designs will allow for delivery directly to the homes
  • A real, working water delivery system, which is a major improvement over having to go to a spring to obtain water
