UMass Lowell Southwick Parking Lot Redesign

Course: 25.108 Introduction to Engineering II (Civil Engineering)
Semester: Spring 2009
Instructor: Jackie Zhang
Partner: University of Massachusetts Lowell

The Southwick Parking Quad is located between Southwick, Falmouth, Kitson and Pasteur on North Campus. The lot accommodates 65 cars plus 3 HP spots; the lot is designated for faculty/staff. The original intent of the lot was to provide green space for students and faculty/staff, there was a small access road for emergency vehicles. Sometime during the 1960’s +/- the demand for parking spaces necessitated the need to convert this space into a parking lot. The creation of this lot did ease the parking demand but it created an area that is not pedestrian friendly, very difficult to manage during snow removal operations (snow needs to be trucked away) and is a very congested parking area.

Learning objectives met by the S-L project were for students to:

  • Be able to make 2D line and dimensioned engineering drawings using AutoCad
  • Be able to present technical information to an audience in both written format and oral format

Community objectives met by the S-L project:

  • Re-design the parking lot to increase the number of spaces
  • Improve pedestrian access to UML facilities
  • Maintain handicap parking as dictated by code
  • Improve snow removal and snow farming operations
