Green Building Upgrades for North American Indian Coalition of Boston

Course: 22.504 - Energy Systems Design
Semester: Fall 2006
Instructor: John Duffy
Partner:The North American Indian Coalition of Boston (NAICOB)

Brief Description:

Three students conducted an energy efficiency improvement analysis for the North American Indian Coalition of Boston (NAICOB) to identify and suggest remedies for the least energy efficient components or areas of the NAICOB building. Students developed a thermal model, assessed energy reduction techniques such as passive solar and conducted simulations after data collection. The student report provided an energy usage analysis, cost benefit analysis, and suggestions for NAICOB consideration. For example, it was recommended that the center switch to compact fluorescent light (CFL) rather than continued use of incandescent light.

Community needs met:

  • The report is being used by the NAICOB to decide on upgrades to the heating system in its building. A new furnace was purchased, and funds are being raised for additional upgrades.
