14.352 Concrete Design Descriptions

The Civil & Environmental Engineering Department is proposing a large-scale service-learning project that involves the development of a trolley service between the North, East, and South campuses by means of a trolley/pedestrian bridge crossing the Merrimack River. The proposal will also include for a facilities/terminal building to be located between the Costello Gym and the Pinanski Nuclear Reactor. In this class the project involved dealing with a small part of the design of the facilities/terminal building; the students were able to design one of the concrete support columns for the building: they determined the column’s size, the type, size and arrangement for reinforcement, and they also designed the footing. Therefore, the project served to meet the overall objective of this course, which was to provide an introduction to reinforced concrete design, with an emphasis on the use and interpretation of the Building Code Requirements for Structural Concrete (ACI 318-05). A positive result worthy of note was that in the student survey the students were asked if they felt that the SLICE project had helped them to integrate the course material? The responses were: Definitely yes, 85%; Yes 15%! The professor also had some positive results: she reported that “Another way in which I benefited was that the level of their satisfaction resulted in their giving me high marks in the course evaluations”.

14.555 Advanced Structural Design Description

This project is also related to the Civil & Environmental Engineering Department’s proposing for a large-scale service-learning project that involves the development of a trolley service between the North, East, and South campuses by means of a trolley. Here, the students designed the floors of the facilities/terminal building as a two-way slab. Next they designed the columns and beams. They then analyzed the building using the GTSTUDL computer software to create 2D and 3D models of the frame of the building, taking into consideration the wind loading, live load and the dead load. AUTOCAD was used to show the details of their design. This project integrated most of the material discussed during the course which covered the following: the design of square, rectangular, combined and strap footings, the design of cantilever retaining walls, the design of T-beams and composite beams, the design of slender columns, the design of shear walls, the design of two-way slabs and design of multi-story frames. This project will ultimately help in the preparation of the design proposal for the community trolley.
